Packkr App is a travel and dating app that connects like-minded people and creating a community that will help new travellers plan their journey without any hassle. It motivates other people to travel more by rewarding them & promote travel. As the sole UX Designer in the team, I was in charge of the product design of the Android and Ios versions of the app.
We wanted to make an app for travellers and people who frequently travel with friends or on a solo trip. One of the key problems identified in travelling is to find the route and itinerary for any trip destination.

People who Love to travel; Travel not only mean outstation trips to him (Going out with friends to the nearest mall also excites them), should be young and attractive, a bit of extrovert who loves to go out with friends and love to meet strangers. Not so shy to take the first lead. Always ready to help and reach out to people in need. Curious about different personalities and Love adventure & exploration.
We wanted to make an app for travellers and people who frequently travel with friends or on a solo trip. One of the key problems identified in travelling is to find the route and itinerary for any trip destination. Travellers and people who love to travel find it difficult to add a stranger to their trip. In the existing market, there are many datings apps and travelling apps to create trip but these apps don't have the feature to connect the travellers with their dating partner who is also interested in planning trip.
To solve the problem of every traveller and people who love to go on a trip with backpacking. We introduced dating and trip planning by exploring different trips across India. The goal of this project is to add the dating experience with travelling in a single app. It is basically connecting travellers.
So there will be three main features in the app
1. Connecting and Dating with travellers.
2. Creating and planning a trip with group or solo
3. Exploring other trips on feeds and stories from travellers communities.
Major Selling point
1. User can enter the destination.
2. He can then see popular destinations around that area.
3. Popular travellers recommendation that has been to that destination or nearby destinations.
4. Current travellers heading towards(only if they have created a trip to this destination) or nearby to that destination.
5. Create an I-ternary for travellers.
6. They can create a journey, add multiple destinations, POI.
7. They can find local stalls, homestay, etc or add them.
8. A journey or timeline will be created with all the pictures & stops with tentative dates and time spent at that place.
In order to identify if this product was worth building, as well as what is needed to accomplish, we started out interview and survey with a set of users.I want to identify the problems of users who travel a lot with friends, solo or with their partner. The main challenges of users on their way to the trip journey.
1. Understand how users are currently planning their trips.
2. Understand how users create trip itineraries with routes.
3. Learn how user feel during a group trip.
4. Learning how user interact while making friends on the trips.
5. Learning which apps and tools user use to make a trip plan and share with friends.
To quantify the data collected from the interviews I conducted an online survey. The questions were based on habits, motivations, and challenges while using travelling mobile applications, creating trip plans, finding their partner on the trips.
Results summary:
1. 20-30 years old.
2. Google Maps, TripAdvisor, Makemytrip, Tripoto were the most commonly used tools to plan a trip.
3. 70% consider planning an itinerary very important.
4 72% create trip itineraries from scratch, including majority activities like flights, accommodations, cultural places, restaurants and bar reservations.
5. Once they're on the trip, the majority of users plan their trip solo and some of them prior to the trip with their friends.
6. They also use mobile applications to keep and manage their itinerary.
7. They plan their trips as groups.
8. To help with planning and organising a trip, their ideal mobile application should have travel times in between plans/places, a trip route feature with planning the trip budget, and different plans on the same trip if travelling with friends.
Based on the interviews, three main target user were identified.
User Persona — Meet ‘Shanice’
The target user for this app will start
1. Interested in Connecting + Travelling
2. Interested in Travelling & exploring.
3. Interested only in dating and connecting.
Age group 20 - 35
After gathering data from the interviews and survey I performed a competitive analysis, testing three direct competitors to identify what currently is working well for users and compare their features with the expectations of my online survey users. This will be helpful for designing the user flow maps and wireframes.
I created a flow map that produced a list of important questions. With consideration, I could work through them as I wanted to avoid far-reaching navigation implications in the design phase. These structures highlight critical user flows of the application and break down processes the user would use to achieve specific tasks. It was time to narrow it down and identify what features should exist that aligned with my goals and the user's main needs.
So there will be three main features in the app.
1. Connecting and Dating with travellers.
Connecting like-minded people community who’s more interested in travelling and expeditions. Creating a community where travellers actually help each other. Group travelling is more fun and trackable.
2.Creating and planning a trip with group or solo
A smart trip planner within the app to help new travellers plan their journey without any hassle. Solo travelling feels safe. Group travelling is more fun and trackable. Motivates other people to travel more by rewarding them & promote travel. Sharing of a trip with other community members who’re going in a similar direction. Live to track of a Trip. Can share the trip detail with friends or family (just like live location in WhatsApp). Each destination of the trip will have a planning feature for the next solo or group trip within your budget, time frame and route destination with literary activities popular places.
3.Exploring other trips on feeds and stories from travellers community.
Heat map of any destination or place. It will show the number of community members at that place with a male/female ratio. Socialization in the travel community.Forum discussion related to a journey where travellers share their experiences related to a destination.
Based on the user flows, I sketch out some of the screens such that there was a minimal level of difficulty immediately accessing relevant information. Sketching first allowed me to gain an intimate insight into what layouts will work before getting digital with it.
To brainstorm and test the initial design I created a Digital wireframe in AdobeXD.This process was very valuable and helped me to identify changes and focus on how to solve the user's problems without worrying about the visual design. Creating detailed wireframes helped make navigation seamless and straightforward. Each main user flow is represented and an onboarding process for app integration began to be developed.

Travellers
The travellers are the main user of the application. Each traveller is also a guide when he helps others in the community. Majorly identifiable in two types, global traveller or local traveller. Or we can say the different level of travellers just like google local guide usually, all traveller will start as a local traveller & depending on their travel history they’ll be promoted to traveller level.Depending on the level of travellers their milestone or challenges will be set dynamically. On completing these milestones traveller will be promoted to a level. Challenges might include completing a number of trips Travelling no of km in total. Giving reviews or feedbacks. Voting a review or post or destination. Posting blogs and comments. Taking part in forums or discussions.
Send a request to other travellers and send them trip invite through chat screens. Chatbot feature for starting the conversation.
Trip feed to check other travellers feed and upcoming trips details.
1. Check other travellers feed
2. Check your feed
1. Create your trip
Generate stats for all your travels. Create a timeline of a journey creates an itinerary map to plan an upcoming trip. Tracking activities of the user. When destination & routes are updated on the app, suggest some itineraries from popular trips/travellers/guides for this journey Open the camera in-app when there is an ongoing trip and show feed, my trip, discover & people icon to navigate easily.
Travellers can create a trip and invite others to join it. While planning any trip we can set our budget, so that traveller can figure out easily what he can enjoy within that range. Travellers can also follow live trip if allowed by other travellers. Or can schedule a trip and make it public and let other nearby people search for upcoming trips and join them. Multiple travellers can join a trip and chose to either complete the whole trip with the trip owner or just a part of it. Refresh recommendations based on vacations, weekdays, long weekends.
2. Check Map view and list view of the trip route
Every trip will have a starting point and destinations and an ending point, there can be multiple destinations. The destination can also be set as a primary destination, denoting the main destination. Traveller can view the trip route with a map view and route view.
Each trip will have a trip route which will be divided into multiple routes between consecutive two destinations. Each destination will have arrival/departure, for a starting point, there will be no arrival time, for the ending point there will be no departure time.
If the starting point is the same as the ending point then arrival time will more than the departure time of the last destination. Each trip will also have a distance travelled a bit, which will help in identifying if the trip was short or long or etc. Will also include a trip planner. Each destination will have a to-do list/notes as an itinerary. Remark or moment notes attached, with each picture I click or the places I visit.
3. Destination
The destination is something a user can make a trip to or visit.
It can be of multiple types: like some waterfall, any popular monument or building, someplace or market Any stall, shop, restaurant, hotels, or resorts. It might or might not have contact person detail, depending on its type. It will a location point attached to it may be a list of similar/nearby destinations. List of reviews & feedback, and the most popular things to do or enjoy at this place. List of pictures, by owner (if any), by google (maybe) or by travellers, related list of blogs by travellers. Popular travellers that have been to this destination. Popular trips to this destination. The total number of trips to this destination by travellers community. The popularity of this destination in the local area and globally.
Learnings
Designing the Packkr app from start to finish was such a great learning experience. Starting from the user research to high fidelity prototypes taught me so much about the user-centred design process. Having a concrete understanding of how users think and feel is essential to make the right design decisions along the way.Likewise, the user testing phase to get real feedback in the visual design and navigation. I couldn’t have designed a product that users enjoy using without the help of the people who would actually use it.
Future Roadmaps
In the future, I plan to include:To add your monthly or yearly trip guide feature.Tracking the journey of user with their Youtube videosEstimated travelling times between itinerary plansDifferent itinerary groups in the same trip, for when travelling with friends that have different interests. Voting a review or post or destination.Posting blogs and comments.Taking part in forums or discussions.Helping other travellers in any wayCompleting milestones makes travellers eligible for some rewards or coupon or any motivating factor (yet to be decided).Completing these challenges will unlock achievements & Badges. Eg.“King of destination”, “Ice Breaker”, “Check-in Master”.
